THOSE SIMPLE SUMMERS
Summer makes me think about family vacations - then and now."Then" as it was when I was a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s. "Now" as it is today in 2009. "Then", our family vacation was always a road trip outside the state of Ohio that could last anywhere from four to ten days. At sunrise we would load up the car - luggage, the cooler filled with sandwiches, pop, chips, etc. and then us - mom and dad in the front and "the boys", all four of us, in the back. Each day was typically divided in three parts - drive to a destination that had some educational value (Gettysburg, Niagara Falls, etc.), go on some guided tours and then (our favorite part) find a hotel for less than $30 per night that had a swimming pool and go swimming 'til we were exhausted. Nothing could be more fun than jumping off a diving board a hundred times into a lighted pool on a hot summer night with your three brothers as your mom and dad watched, laughed and rested from the side of the pool.

When they finally closed the pool the six of us would pile into a one bedroom motel room with the a/c cranked up. I'm not sure how we did that but it was so much fun! I remembered thinking, "What a vacation!", "What a life!" Funny how I hardly noticed all the things we didn't have. We didn't have air conditioning in our car or power windows (we just manually rolled our windows down), or seat belts, or car seats. We also didn't have motel reservations - with a motel guide and map, dad would just drive until it was dinner time and then look for a motel that had vacancy - it always seemed to work out. We didn't have a GPS (navigation system) - we used real maps! We didn't have video games, or DVD players or iPods, or cell phones for phone calls or texting, or laptop computers to check emails, or cable TV, or Starbucks! I also didn't ever have to think about the cost - mom and dad did, but we "boys" didn't. Gas cost about 20-30 cents per gallon back then and the gas station attendant knew what to do when you said "filler-up". You got change back from your dollar at McDonald's and TV was free. And the stock market - who cared? It was simply - more simple.
